An individual who was recovered from the water near the railroad bridge over the Cayuga Inlet by the Ithaca fish ladder on Wednesday has died, according to Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne.
Sheriff Osborne confirmed that the man was pulled from the water and transported to a local hospital. He was alive at the time of transfer but later died at the hospital.
The incident reportedly occurred while the man was attempting to retrieve a bicycle that had fallen into the water. Authorities responded to the scene Wednesday afternoon.
The railroad bridge and fish ladder is near the City of Ithaca’s sanctioned encampment, known as the “Exception Zone” and “Jungle 1,” and is frequently traversed by people experiencing homelessness.
Further details, including the man’s identity, have not been released.
