IPD Deescalates Mental Health Crisis With McDonald’s When Mobile Crisis Team Does Not Respond

Ithaca Police Department (IPD) officers talked down a man in a mental health crisis while responding to a call around 8 AM Saturday, April 2nd. As officers made contact, the subject brandished a box cutter and held it to his own neck.

Initially attempting to summon the Tompkins County Mobile Crisis Team, an IPD officer was able to communicate with the subject. After conversing with an officer, the individual in crisis was given coffee and a breakfast sandwich from McDonald’s.

IPD officers were then able to take the individual into custody unharmed.
