Spate Of Burglaries, Thefts Continue In West End

A cluster of burglaries, thefts and attempted thefts at businesses were reported having occurred along Cecil Malone Drive and Taughannock Boulevard on Saturday, July 9th.

Ithaca Police took reports at Safelite Auto Glass, The Fraternal Order of Eagles, ABC Oriental Rugs, Warehouse Carpet & On the Street Pitas. All of these establishments, apart from On The Street Pitas, are on Cecil Malone Drive.

At 6:37 AM Officers received a report of a burglary at Safelite Auto Glass located at 150 Cecil Malone
Drive. Cash had been stolen from inside a safe and an exterior door had been damaged.

At 7:41 AM Officers responded to the Fraternal Order of Eagles at 161 Cecil Malone Drive for a report of an attempted burglary. A masked subject attempted to break into the building around 2:30 AM. The suspect also attempted to enter a vehicle parked in the parking lot and a nearby shed without success. The suspect caused property damage while attempting to break into the building.

At 8:24 AM Officers responded to On the Street Pitas in the 300 Block of Taughannock Boulevard for a report that the business had been broken into. Cash & electronics were stolen.

At 1:05 PM officers responded to ABC Oriental Rugs at 130 Cecil A. Malone Drive for a report of a burglary. An individual gained entry into a garage at the business and removed property.

At 1:21 PM Officers responded to the Warehouse Carpet Outlet at 170 Cecil A. Malone Drive for a report of a vehicle at that location that had been rummaged through. It is unknown if any items were removed from the vehicle.

A motorcycle was theft was also reported to have occurred at Precision Filters at 240 Cherry Street on Thursday the 7th, at about 5 PM. The suspect, a Caucasian male with a beard, wearing all black clothing, pushed the motorcycle off of the property southbound on Cherry Street.

These are the latest in an ongoing series of incidents in Ithaca’s West End relating to illegal homeless encampments and residents of the Arthaus building. Tompkins County Legislator and West End resident Rich John addressed these issues during public comment at Ithaca’s Common Council in November of last year.

In November of 2021, a group of West End property owners outlined their concerns regarding illegal camping in a letter to then Mayor Myrick & the Ithaca Common Council.
